PINE RIDGE WORK PROJECT
There are over 38,000 Lakota (Sioux) living on the pine Ridge reservation. As a population group, they have the highest rate on unemployment, alcoholism, diabetes, and teen suicide of any other group in America. Shannon County which comprises the majority of the reservation is the poorest county in the United States, and the reservation has the lowest life expectancy rate, not only in the U.S., but in the entire Western Hemisphere, with the exclusion of Haiti.

We can’t change all of the problems on Pine Ridge, but with your help, we can address one of their most pressing needs. Housing on the rez can only be described as third world. With an estimated population of 38,000, there are approximately 3, 500 housing units on the rez, which means that, on average, each little housing unit needs to accommodate 10 people or more.
The vast majority of the homes on the rez are in dire need of repair, and we will be hosting a mission to go to the rez and conduct various housing maintenance projects. We have identified a group of work projects for some well deserving people near the Lakota village of Wanblee. Some of these projects are simple and won’t cost a lot of money , while a few are more involved. If you think your church or organization would like to send a work team and help us pay for the projects, this kind of a mission trip will lift the spirits of both the Lakota families and those who will come with us to serve the Lord with our hands and hearts.
We plan to go to the reservation August 8-20, 2016 and are currently working on finalizing lodging. Work participants are asked to help pay the cost of lodging and meals with a contribution of $200.00 per person. WHR will cover any expenses over that amount and will provide a project manager who will coordinate all projects and logistics. Work group participants will provide their own transportation to and from Pine Ridge (approximately 780 miles from Milwaukee). Work groups will pick their projects and each project listed will identify the number of people needed, along with the cost.
