2013 was a transitional year for Worldwide Hunger Relief. Karl Ralian stepped back from day to day management of the organization and Curt Steinquist took over the food packing portion of the organization. In 2013 we packed and shipped almost one million meals to Haiti, El Salvador, Guatemala, Tanzania, and to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. With Curt’s expert guidance and our new dedicated warehouse, we look forward to packing many more meals in 2014, meals which will nourish hungry children, while the act of packing food will nourish the spirits of the packers. Please visit our pending pack PAGE(???) to sign up for future packs. Also, if your church or group is interested in conducting your own food pack, please email Curt at: Curt@worldwidehungerrelief.org
In March we fed over 500 people who were living in the various shelters in Waukesha. This was in conjunction with “Match Day” a day in which the Greater Milwaukee Foundation matches any donations received that day, and we fed the people to help publicize the event. We boiled up several hundred pounds of corned beef and made giant corned beef sandwiches with delicious Miller’s Rye, along with kosher pickles and chips In August we partnered with an inner city church to help them conduct a block party. We donated a BBQ pig, chickens on the grill, hot dogs and various sausages, along with French fries, onion rings, and other fried goodies. We spent the day cooking and hanging out with our new friends in the 17th and Locust neighborhood.
In November we purchased 100 Turkeys, hams, and all the fixings to make a complete dinner and we helped an inner city youth group deliver the meal boxes to the elderly and people that we knew were struggling. In December we worked with a number of churches in Waukesha to organize and run “The Season of Giving,” a one day “store” where local poor people and their families can come and “shop” for free gifts for their families. We set up a dollar for dollar match and we donated over $4,000.00 to help buy gifts for people who would not otherwise be able to exchange gifts for their families.
We have partnered with our Lakota friends on the reservation for a number of years to help them in their struggle to survive the harsh conditions on the reservation and to maintain their dignity. We collect clothing and needed household items and then ship them to the reservation. In 2013 we sent 2 full semi loads of donated items to Pine Ridge. In the week before Easter we sent a group of our people to the town of Wanblee on the reservation to conduct a huge Easter Egg hunt for the local children. We filled thousands of plastic eggs with candy for the children and everyone had a ball. We also sent all the food for a great ham dinner for approximately 700 people. In July we sent another group for a 4th of July bash that included one of the best fireworks displays anyone on the reservation had ever seen.
We paid for a large BBQ grill made out of an oil tank and provided hamburgers, brats and all the fixings for a delicious cookout for the residents of the Eagle’s Nest District of the reservation. To end the year we once again sent a semi load of clothing, gifts and food for Christmas on the reservation. Many hearts were touched, both on the reservation and also here in Wisconsin.
It has been a blessing for us to be in partnership with these proud people who struggle to hold onto their identity. By giving, we receive. Please consider becoming workers with us in our mission to feed the hungry in Haiti, El Salvador, Pine Ridge, Milwaukee and Waukesha.
